Patient Reported Outcomes - Getting Our Act Together

Our patients are the backbone of the practice of medicine.  They can tell us so much about how best to care for them, if we only took time to listen.  The National Glaucoma Think Tank was a collaborative qualitative study group involving patients, doctors and allied medical personnel.  Together, a blueprint for the optimal delivery of glaucoma care was formulated including the Patient reported Outcome and Experience Measure (POEM).  This valuable tool enables clinicians to evaluate their practice and have a better understanding of their patients.

Professor Peter Shah is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Supra-Regional Glaucoma Specialist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. He is also a Visiting Professor to the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology). He is Honorary Professor of Glaucoma at the Centre for Health and Social Care Improvement at the University of Wolverhampton.
