Hydrodelineation is utilised in situations when there is potential compromise of the posterior capsule. This can occur especially when a posterior polar cataract is present.  The hydrodissection cannula instead of being placed just under the CCC margin, is inserted into the cortical material to dissect into a plane in between the cortex and the nucleus.  The fluid wave cleaves these layers as evidenced by the “Golden ring” sign.  This results is free rotation of the nucleus within the cortical layer, thereby avoiding extension of a posterior capsular defect.
