Cataract Surgery - Pre-operative Preparation of Surgeon and Patient

Cataract surgery is the most common type of eye surgery performed.  Rates of success are  very high, however careful preparation of the surgeon and patient, ensures the best possible outcomes.  Preparation for surgery starts at the initial consultation, with careful documentation of a surgical plan based on the clinical findings.  In the week prior to surgery anticoagulation cessation needs to be considered and any potential medical problems addressed with the anaesthetist informed prior to the day of surgery.  The surgeon needs to be at optimal mental and physical state on the day,   The surgical and anaesthetic team needs to be prepared for complex and/or complicated intra-operative situations.  Pre-operative preparation is critical to surgical success.
