The skin around the eyes or periorbita is prone to exposure to various eye medications and the preservatives, in particular benzalkonium chloride.  The reaction may be due to chemical sensitivity or a true allergic response.  It can occur immediately, early or late in the drug administration so a high index of suspicion will result in appropriate management.
